Stuart Roy: ‘Newt has become a hindrance’

There’s news that Santorum backers are pressuring Newt to drop out of the race. It’s true. We are.

From Fox News:

“With Gingrich exiting the race it would be a true head-to-head race and conservatives would be able to make a choice between a consistent conservative in Rick Santorum or Mitt Romney,” Stuart Roy, an adviser to the Santorum-backing Red, White and Blue Fund, said in a statement.

“For instance, with Gingrich out of the race, Santorum would have won both Ohio and Michigan. Newt has become a hindrance to a conservative alternative.”

Newt, in reply, ignores people like me and the millions in flyover country who are supporting Rick Santorum as he claims the “elite” are wanting him to get out of the race.

Gingrich said he’s not going to let the “elite” decide the nomination, ridiculing those who declared his campaign “dead” over the summer before he won South Carolina in January — and suggesting he is ripe for another surge.

As I wrote earlier, if Newt doesn’t get out now, he could very well go down in history as the Republican who helped ensure Obama won a second term. His false claim that the “elite” want him out of the race would be a part of that history. Newt has become “me-deep” in the “inevitability” camp. If he put a sign around his neck that says “self-service gas can be yours in abundance,” we’d interpret that differently than his diehard supporters would. I love Newt. He’s my second choice for president…but we can’t let Obama have another term. It is what it is.
