Rick Santorum was on three of the Sunday news shows this morning and was asked about the president’s move to force Catholic institutions to provide contraception to people, something Catholic institutions cannot do or they would no longer be Catholic institutions in nature. Many mainstream media outlets continue to spread misinformation about Rick Santorum’s position on this issue even though it should be very simple to understand. He did a good job of explaining this, and I’ll post the video when it’s available. The bottom line is that if Rick Santorum were president, he would take no action whatsoever to ban contraception. None. Zero. Nada. He knows that’s not within the authority of the president to ban contraception. Only a tyrant would do that. Hence, what the president is attempting to do in forcing the Church to pay for contraception is an act of tyranny from the White House.
The Obama administration claims that women have a right to contraception and that this justifies forcing Catholic institutions to fund it against the teachings of the Catholic Faith. But as a Christian woman, I just have to say that I have the right to a gun and a Bible, as well. Why isn’t the president claiming that the Catholic Church buy a gun for me? Or that secular institutions pay for the distribution of Bibles? The reason is that the Obama administration has no idea what a “right” is. Just as no private institution should be forced to fund the provision of Bibles and guns, the Church should not be forced to fund the provision of contraception.
Rights and entitlements are two different things. This is not rocket science. If it would be wrong for the Obama administration to force private institutions to pay for Bibles and guns, then it is also wrong for him to force private institutions to pay for contraception in violation of their own conscience.
Rick Santorum knows what freedom is about. President Obama does not. That’s the bottom line.
